dawn do us part
03:06
|
|||
late night bar, noisy booth
people talk to avoid the truth
leave tomorrow on a one-way plane
bound for a coast where no one knows my name
she walks in, i walk out
for a cigarette and a title bout
she just smiles when i walk back in
with a wink and a nod and a busted chin
and she says to him
stay with me for as long as you can
be my one and only one night stand
i say baby i ain't got no heart
but i'll stay with you
till dawn do us part
you can call me selfish
you can call me immature
call it what you want to
but i'm walking out the door
i say goodbye in the morning light
she'll be crying but i'll be alright
stay with me for as long as you can
be my one and only one night stand
i say baby i ain't got no heart
but i'll stay with you
till dawn do us part
So it's the girl of my dreams
who split from the scene
waltzes back back into my life
so i say hello
and i say lets go
make up for lost time
and she says
stay with me for as long as you can
be my one and only one-woman man
i say baby you done broke my heart
but i'll stay with you
till dawn do us part

no lights
03:47
|
|||
it's a weeklong kinda evening
for a part time stumble bum
the bartender whispers last call
but it's only half past one
i tell him i'm just passing through
and a shot of jack is all i'll do
cause i can't afford the johnny walker blues
and i ain't some big movie star
who wears the latest fashion
so it's no lights, no camera, no action
there's a blonde across the bar
and she's sipping on champagne
and her bullion hair flows everywhere
like amber waves of grain
yeah i could take my chances
but romance called out today
plus she's nine feet to the left of me
and that's ten too far away
so i flick the switch on this cancer stick
and i wait for her reaction
but there's no light, no camera, no action
hey if you know a place to go
where i could rest my shoes
i'll take a shot of jack and a heart attack
with a six pack full of blues
those crickets make an orchestra
as i walk these streets alone
i'm thinking about a park bench
maybe calling it my home
and that church is an acropolis
to the topless bars below
where the girls don't ever give it up
cause there's always one more show
so i just stick my thumb out
for the cars that should be passing
but there's no lights, no camera, no action
hey if you know a place to go
where i can rest my shoes
i'll waste my charms in the tattooed arms
of a girl named betty lou

you stared at me with wandering eyes
and vaguely gazed at my surprise
when you told me we were doomed from the start
long distance doesn't work
more miles equals hurt
and that's no good for anyone's heart
you faked like you cared
running fingers through your hair
one of us lied
and one of us cried
but i don't know why at all
one of us sins
nobody wins
when there's no one there to cushion your fall
i let you inside
but you said nobody died
everything's right with the world
if the world was what
you cared about
then why'd i never hear you scream and shout
when the water rose
over new orleans
or when mothers cried over dead marines
you cared instead
for the world inside your head
one of us lied
and one of us cried
but i don't know why at all
one of us sins
nobody wins
when there's no one there to cushion your fall
i let you inside
but you said nobody died
everything's right with the world
so you found yourself another man
to have and hold and understand
to be the man that i could never be
he's magical, wonderful, even more
he finished school
he's everything you're never gonna need
and more importantly
he's not me
so i hope he drinks
and i hope he thinks
he's better than you when he ain't
i hope it burns
when you start to yearn
for a memory that's faint
i hope you fight
and as you cry yourself to sleep tonight
everything's right with the world

lazy river
02:37
|
|||
she's my queen of hearts
i know where she ends but
i don't know where she starts
she's my big old lazy river
moving down to new orleans
she's as wide as a mile
just enough to make a poor boy smile
she's my big old lazy river
she's moving down to new orleans
well i tried to change her
and i tried to contain her
but i know it's all in vain
cause she's a woman
and just like a woman
they ain't never gonna change
lay on your banks
and i start dreaming
and down the river
there's a steamboat steaming
steaming down my big old lazy river
and moving down to new orleans
she's big,
she's mean and bold
and in the wintertime
her ass gets cold
she's my big old lazy river
moving down to new orleans

a kid again
02:35
|
|||
i'd ride the bus to school each day
and in the back is where i'd stay
cause that's where all the cool kids sit
i'd run for student government
i'd be elected president
and all the kids would love me
cause i got the school a swimming pool
i wanna be a kid again
i wanna be a kid again
i'll do anything i can
just let me be a kid again
i'd be the smartest kid in class
having all the teachers kiss my ass
i'm taking all the hardest classes
skating right on through
and colleges would beg and plead
cause my gpa's a 4.3
i'm captain of the football team
and i sing in chorus too
and my girlfriend would be the hottest girl in school
and everybody'd think i was oh so cool
and they'd be right
i wanna be a kid again
i wanna be a kid again
i'll do anything i can
just let me be a kid again
don't know much about history
don't know much biology
don't know much about no science books
and je ne sais pas about the french i took
but i know
i wanna be a kid again
i wanna be a kid again
i'll do anything i can
just let me be a kid again
no i won't start foodfights
and i won't tell jokes
i won't spread rumors that the teacher smokes
and i won't go throwing frogs into the swimming pool
and i won't go streaking through the all-girls school
i wanna be a kid again
i wanna be a kid again
i'll do anything i can
just let me be a kid again

anything you want
02:59
|
|||
i'd give up all my bad behavior
just to be your hometown savior
i'd give up all my money
just to get a little taste of that tupelo honey
and i don't know but i've been told
my head's a little rusty but my heart's all gold
and you could be a preacher
or a high school teacher
or a model in a magazine
if you could be anything you want
why can't you be with me
coffee shop, parking lot
white cross walk
where i see you on the corner
but i dare not talk
i stop beside you
when the light turns red
to get a picture of you in my head
and i don't know but i've been told
my head's a little rusty but my heart's all gold
you could be a doctor
or a looker or a hooker
or as classy as a british queen
if you could be anything you want
why can't you be with me
so if by chance or happenstance
you someday notice me
i'd tell you how i think of you
and the way i think it all should be
so you could be an astronaut
or you could be a philly cop
and solve all of those mysteries
yeah you could be a sous chef
or nikita kruschev
just don't point those missiles at me
yeah you could be the dali lama
or my sugar mama
and pay for dinner seven days a week
if you could be anything you want
why can't you be with me

porcelain mary
03:47
|
|||
i had mothers who were bad
even worse dads
bounced from one house to another
till sister grace marie
she gave me dignity
and a statue of the blessed mother
she used to sit on my nightstand
sport a blue headband
and keep me from being awake at night
prayin porcelain mary if you hear me
protect us tonight
i was only 18
full of opportunity
wanting someone to be proud of me
so i took that statue of mary
and whatever i could carry
and i up and joined the marines
and as we lead this attack
through the streets of iraq
i stop for a minute to pray
porcelain mary if you hear me
protect us today
she used to sit on my nightstand
sport a blue headband
and keep me from being alone
i fall to the dirt
there's a hole in my shirt
and i'm seconds from dying
i know i'm done
when the sand turns to mud
and the blood on my hands starts drying
the bullets keep flying
i'm sitting here crying
just laying here dying alone
till porcelain mary comes to carry me home
she used to sit on my nightstand
sport a blue headband
and keep me from being alone
and now porcelain mary's comin to carry me home

@34th
03:49
|
|||
i'm off the train at 34th
staring up at new york
and i'm confused as hell
cause the sign says to astoria
and i can't take no more of the
longing just to know if you're well
every train comes every eight
and i'm twenty minutes late
i can't wait to find out how you've been
you don't need no man
cause you'll make it on your own
you don't need no friends
cause you'll go drinking alone
you don't need no lover cause
you can't take comfort in him
but if you change your mind again
i'll be any of them
i see you on the stoop
and i'm walking up to you
you look great for 23
and you run to me with those open arms
and above the sound of the car alarms
i hear you say you missed me
every train comes every eight
and i'm twenty minutes late
i can't wait to find out how you've been
you don't need no man
cause you'll make it on your own
you don't need no friends
cause you'll go drinking alone
you don't need no lover cause
you can't take comfort in him
but if you change your mind again
i'll be any of them
you don't need no shelter
cause you ain't got no storm
you don't need no blankets
cause love will keep you warm
love ain't the answer
but love is all we got
all we need's an ending
story book or not
you don't need no man
cause you'll make it on your own
you don't need no friends
cause you'll go drinking alone
you don't need no lover cause
you can't take comfort in him
but if you change your mind again
i'll be any of them
